Catherine Crowell of Rebuilding Together New Orleans took to the airwaves on August 22 to offer expert guidance to victims of this month’s floods who are beginning to gut their homes.

Speaking to Fox 8 anchor John Snell, Crowell had some great advice for anyone currently digging out from the floods.

Safety is always the biggest priority, especially when it comes to the risk of electrical shock or fires caused by water damaged electrical systems.

“Most of the houses we saw this weekend, the water has receded, but the water came up over the outlets,” she said. “What you want to do is go out to your main breaker box outside and turn off the power.”

Crowell also has great tips about what you should definitely throw away after a flood, what you can keep, and exactly where you should cut into flood damaged Sheetrock.
