In 1988, the Preservation Resource Center instituted a one day neighborhood revitalization program in the Lower Garden District. The pilot program, named Christmas in October New Orleans, was modeled after the national Christmas In April USA program.
Christmas in April/Christmas in October changed its name to Rebuilding Together. The national organization – Rebuilding Together Inc. – is headquartered in Washington, D.C., and promotes the replication and coordination of affiliates throughout the United States. Founded in 1988, the national office provides assistance to affiliates in program development, board and staff development, marketing, communications, and financial management.
After Katrina, the Rebuilding Together New Orleans affiliate began repairing hurricane and flood damaged homes for the city's residents. Rebuilding Together has taken on the challenges of total renovation so that elderly and disable homeowners can safely move back into their homes.
