SUMMARY:Reviving the Lost Art of Moving Houses with Writer & Journalist Nicola Twilley (Virtual Event)
DESCRIPTION:What You’ll Learn \n\n\n\nWhat if the best way to save a historic house was to move it?  \n\n\n\nEvery year\, thousands of perfectly good homes across the United States are demolished while housing remains in short supply. At the same time\, construction and demolition debris makes up a significant share of what we send to landfills\, and the carbon embodied in new building materials carries a substantial environmental cost. In this illustrated presentation\, writer and journalist Nicola Twilley will explore an old solution that is making a surprising comeback: moving houses.  \n\n\n\nTwilley will introduce the Historic Home Relocation Project\, which launched in 2025 to move homes slated for demolition in Altadena\, California\, to lots where they can replace houses destroyed in the Eaton Fire. Drawing on her research into the history of house-moving in the United States and Los Angeles\, she’ll explore why moving buildings was once commonplace\, why the practice fell out of favor\, and what it might take to revive it today.  \n\n\n\nThe history is stranger than you might expect\, involving movie stars\, dressage horses\, and skyscrapers sliced in half. But house-moving isn’t simply a historical curiosity. In an era of managed coastal retreat\, extreme weather\, housing shortages\, and climate change\, it may offer a compelling tool for rethinking how we preserve\, relocate\, and reuse buildings.  \n\n\n\nFollowing Twilley’s presentation\, we’ll bring in a New Orleans expert in historic house moving for a conversation comparing the experiences of Los Angeles and New Orleans. Together\, we’ll explore how the opportunities and challenges of moving houses play out in two cities with very different histories\, landscapes\, housing markets\, and climate risks.   \n\n\n\nThe program will conclude with an audience Q&A.  \n\n\n\nWhy Take This Class? \n\n\n\nHouse-moving offers a fascinating—and increasingly relevant—way to think about preservation\, sustainability\, and the future of our cities. As communities grapple with climate change\, extreme weather\, housing shortages\, and the loss of existing buildings\, understanding when and how a building can be moved rather than demolished gives us another tool for imagining what’s possible.  \n\n\n\nJoin us for a lively look at the lost art of moving houses and what its revival might mean for New Orleans and beyond.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n About the Instructor\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Nicola Twilley is author of Frostbite: How Refrigeration Changed Our Food\, Our Planet\, and Ourselves\, winner of the 2025 James Beard Award for Literary Writing\, the 2025 California Book Awards Nonfiction Gold Medal\, the 2025 Nach Waxman Prize\, and the 2025 Nautilus Book Awards Gold Medal for Journalism and Investigative Reporting. She is co-host of the award-winning Gastropod podcast\, which looks at food through the lens of history and science and is part of the Vox Media Podcast Network in partnership with Eater. Her first book\, Until Proven Safe: The History and Future of Quarantine\, was co-authored with Geoff Manaugh and was named one of the best books of 2021 by Time\, NPR\, The Guardian\, and the Financial Times. She is a contributing writer at The New Yorker and was one of the 2025 winners of the National Academies of Sciences Eric and Wendy Schmidt Awards for Excellence in Science Communications. She lives in Los Angeles.  \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHistoric Core Scholarships\n\n\n\nWe believe preservation education should be accessible to everyone. For all of the PRC’s fee-based programs\, we reserve a portion of seats for Historic Core Scholarships\, providing free registration for community members who are stewards of historic structures (built prior to 1976) and who otherwise might not be able to participate. \n\n\n\nPaid registration fees support the Preservation Resource Center’s educational programs and help us keep them accessible to our community. \n\n\n\nNeed a Historic Core Scholarship? Select the scholarship option when registering. No explanation or documentation is required.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Preservation Resource Center for our annual Design Luncheon\, an afternoon celebrating beautiful homes\, inspired gardens\, and the timeless art of gracious living. \n\n\n\nThis year’s luncheon brings together three extraordinary women whose work has shaped the worlds of interior design\, publishing\, and luxury craftsmanship. Celebrated designer Charlotte Moss\, FLOWER magazine founder and editor-in-chief Margot Shaw\, and New Orleans’ own Jane Scott Hodges\, founder of Leontine Linens\, will share an engaging conversation exploring the traditions\, inspiration\, and personal stories behind the homes we create and the lives we cultivate within them. \n\n\n\nThe discussion will feature Charlotte Moss’ highly anticipated new book\, Charlotte Moss: At Home in Virginia\, alongside Margot Shaw’s newest release\, Flowering Outdoors: Gardens and Parties. Joined by Jane Scott Hodges—whose passion for Southern hospitality and timeless design has made Leontine Linens an internationally recognized luxury brand—the conversation promises an inspiring look at the enduring beauty of thoughtful interiors\, flourishing gardens\, meaningful entertaining\, and the rituals that make a house feel like home. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCharlotte Moss\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWith a career spanning more than four decades\, Charlotte Moss is one of America’s most celebrated interior designers. Since founding her eponymous design firm in 1985\, she has become synonymous with timeless elegance\, layered interiors\, and gracious Southern hospitality. \n\n\n\nDrawing inspiration from history\, architecture\, travel\, and the decorative arts\, Charlotte has designed private residences and executive suites throughout the United States and abroad. Her influence extends beyond interiors through acclaimed collections for Century Furniture\, Fabricut\, Stark Carpet\, Pickard\, P.E. Guerin\, Soicher-Marin\, IBU Clothing\, Artemis Design Company\, and other distinguished brands. \n\n\n\nCharlotte is also an accomplished author whose twelve books have become staples of the design world. Her newest volume\, Charlotte Moss: At Home in Virginia\, to be released in September 2026\, offers an intimate look at the homes\, gardens\, and landscapes that continue to inspire her work. \n\n\n\nHer many honors include the New York School of Interior Design’s Centennial Medal\, the Royal Oak Foundation’s Timeless Design Award\, and recognition on Elle Décor‘s prestigious Grand Masters list. A passionate preservationist and philanthropist\, Charlotte serves on the boards of numerous cultural and historic organizations\, including the Thomas Jefferson Foundation at Monticello\, The Garden Conservancy\, Hillwood Estate\, Museum & Gardens\, and The Madoo Conservancy. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMargot Shaw\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMargot Shaw is the founder and editor-in-chief of FLOWER magazine\, the award-winning publication devoted to flowers\, gardens\, homes\, entertaining\, and inspired living. \n\n\n\nAfter studying art history at Hollins College and interior design at the University of Texas\, Margot discovered a passion for floral design while planning her daughter’s wedding. Recognizing there was no publication dedicated to celebrating flowers as an essential part of everyday living\, she launched FLOWER magazine. Nearly two decades later\, it has become one of the country’s premier lifestyle publications\, inspiring readers with exceptional homes\, gardens\, travel\, design\, and entertaining. \n\n\n\nMargot is a sought-after speaker at museums\, botanical gardens\, antique shows\, and design centers throughout the country. She is the author of Living Floral and her newest book\, Flowering Outdoors: Gardens and Parties\, published in spring 2026\, which celebrates spectacular gardens and the joy of gathering outdoors. \n\n\n\nDeeply committed to philanthropy\, Margot serves on numerous advisory boards and organizations supporting gardens\, preservation\, and community enrichment throughout the South. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJane Scott Hodges \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJane Scott Hodges is the founder and CEO of Leontine Linens\, the nationally acclaimed luxury linen company she established in New Orleans in 1996. Widely recognized for reviving the tradition of couture linens for everyday living\, Jane Scott has spent nearly three decades helping homeowners and designers bring timeless craftsmanship\, personalization\, and hospitality into the home. \n\n\n\nAn entrepreneur\, author\, and respected lifestyle authority\, Jane Scott is the author of the Rizzoli book Linens: For Every Room and Occasion\, an inspiring guide to living and entertaining with fine linens. SUMMARY:Before You Renovate: A Practical Guide to Evaluating Your Historic Home with Architect & Preservationist Alex Barthel
DESCRIPTION:What You’ll Learn  \n\n\n\nThinking about renovating a historic home? Before you hire contractors\, finalize plans\, or start demolition\, it’s worth understanding exactly what you’re working with.  \n\n\n\nIn this hands-on workshop\, architect and preservationist Alex Barthel will walk participants through the process he uses to evaluate a property before a renovation begins. Using real New Orleans homes as case studies\, you’ll learn how to research zoning regulations\, historic district designations\, tax credit opportunities\, property history\, and renovation considerations that can significantly affect the scope\, cost\, and timeline of a project.  \n\n\n\nAlong the way\, Alex will demonstrate practical online tools—including the City of New Orleans Property Viewer\, zoning maps\, tax assessor records\, Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps\, and other public resources—and explain how architects use this information to help clients make informed decisions.  \n\n\n\nWhether you’re considering buying a historic home\, planning a renovation\, or simply curious about how preservation and design intersect\, you’ll leave with a clearer understanding of how to assess a property’s opportunities and constraints before investing time and money.  \n\n\n\nYou’ll Leave Able To:  \n\n\n\n\nResearch the basic history\, zoning\, and regulatory context of a New Orleans property \n\n\n\n\n\nDetermine whether a property may qualify for historic tax credits or fall within historic review districts \n\n\n\n\n\nEstimate the scope and complexity of a renovation at a high level \n\n\n\n\n\nUnderstand when—and why—to bring in professionals such as architects\, contractors\, engineers\, or preservation specialists \n\n\n\n\n\nApproach a renovation project with greater confidence and fewer costly surprises \n\n\n\n\nWhy Take This Class?  \n\n\n\nMany homeowners discover restrictions\, hidden costs\, or preservation requirements only after they’ve purchased a property or begun planning a renovation. This class will help you understand what questions to ask—and where to find the answers—before you commit\, saving time\, money\, and frustration.  \n\n\n\nWhat to Bring  \n\n\n\nA laptop is recommended if you’d like to follow along with the online research tools\, though a notebook is perfectly suitable if you’d prefer to take notes.  \n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Alex Barthel\n Alex Barthel is a licensed architect and preservationist whose practice focuses on the renovation\, addition\, and adaptive reuse of historic homes throughout Louisiana and Mississippi. He believes successful residential design respects a building’s historic character while embracing contemporary living and construction methods. Alex holds both a Master of Architecture and a Master of Preservation Studies from Tulane University’s School of Architecture\, as well as a bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee. \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPay What You CanWe believe everyone should have access to preservation education. SUMMARY:Invisible Cities: New Technologies & the Future of Archaeology with Writer & Educator Geoff Manaugh (Virtual Event)
DESCRIPTION:What You’ll Learn \n\n\n\nWhat if we could uncover lost cities\, forgotten buildings\, and buried landscapes without ever lifting a shovel?  \n\n\n\nIn this illustrated lecture\, Geoff Manaugh (bestselling author of A Burglar’s Guide to the City) will explore the emerging technologies that are changing how archaeologists discover\, map\, and preserve the past. Through stories from his forthcoming book\, Geoff will introduce powerful tools—including ground-penetrating radar\, magnetometry\, muography\, and other forms of remote sensing—that allow researchers to see beneath the earth’s surface without disturbing the sites they study.  \n\n\n\nAlong the way\, you’ll discover the surprising origins of these technologies; how they’re helping archaeologists race against threats like climate change\, development\, and conflict; implications for the field of historic preservation; and why these tools may soon become much more widely accessible.  \n\n\n\nThe presentation will conclude with an audience Q&A.  \n\n\n\nWhy Take This Virtual Class? \n\n\n\nArchaeological sites around the world are disappearing due to climate change\, urban development\, looting\, and conflict. New imaging technologies are allowing researchers to document and protect these places faster than ever before—often without excavation or damage. Join us for a fascinating look at the future of archaeology and what it could mean for the preservation of our shared cultural heritage.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n About the Instructor\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Geoff Manaugh\n Geoff Manaugh is a Los Angeles-based writer and the New York Times bestselling author of A Burglar’s Guide to the City. For more than two decades\, he has written about architecture\, design\, technology\, and the built environment for publications including The New York Times Magazine\, The New Yorker\, WIRED\, MIT Technology Review\, Financial Times Magazine\, New Scientist\, and Dwell. His forthcoming book explores how advances in geophysics are transforming archaeology by revealing hidden traces of human history without excavation.
\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Alex Barthel\n Alex Barthel is a licensed architect and preservationist whose practice focuses on the renovation\, addition\, and adaptive reuse of historic homes throughout Louisiana and Mississippi. SUMMARY:Travel to Sicily with the Preservation Resource Center Fall 2027
DESCRIPTION:Explore Sicily with the PRC\n\n\n\nThe Preservation Resource Center of New Orleans invites you to join an extraordinary architectural and cultural tour of Sicily\, September 30 – October 9\, 2027. Experience the heart of this magnificent island as we uncover its ancient wonders\, vibrant traditions\, and living heritage. \n\n\n\nThis 10-day journey\, created in partnership with Project Por Amor\, will be an immersive exploration led by a team of local historians\, architects\, preservationists\, and artisans. Together\, we’ll trace Sicily’s fascinating history — from the grandeur of Greek and Roman temples to the splendor of Baroque cathedrals\, the charm of medieval hill towns\, and the vitality of contemporary Sicilian culture. \n\n\n\nOur itinerary includes visits to Palermo’s ornate palaces and lively markets\, Agrigento’s stunning Valley of the Temples\, and the seaside beauty of Siracusa and Ortigia.
