Touro-Shakspeare opened as an almshouse in 1933, the third iteration of the almshouse by Judah Touro, a local philanthropist. The building later became an elder care facility but remained open for nearly seven decades until in 2005, Hurricane Katrina made it uninhabitable. Designed by William R. Burk, the building displays both Neo-classical revival and Jacobethan Revival styles with Corinthian columns and decorative brickwork. Due to the building’s deterioration, it was included on the Louisiana Landmarks 2015 New Orleans Nine watch list.

With support from the City of New Orleans, the building is currently undergoing restoration efforts to return it to its original use, an almshouse, just as Judah Touro wanted. The project is facilitated by HRI Properties as the developer, Landis as the general contractor, HCI Architecture as the architects, and Rick Fifield as the historic consultant.
