Come tour the historic Gretna building as it is transformed into a world-class co-working space, event venue and community center. Originally constructed in 1910, the three-story building retains both Italianate Revival and Craftsman style features. In 1911, the building became the first schoolhouse in Gretna, and it served this purpose until 1945, later becoming a welding school for both men and women in response to WWII needs. Owned by Jefferson Parish and it has long housed and been known as the German-American Cultural Center which resides, and will continue to reside, on half of the first floor. The other floors, in recent years, have sat vacant. The current project is funded by the federal American Rescue Plan Act to create retail and co-working space. The developer on the project is Formwork Development LLC, the contractor is Perrier Esquerre Contractors, the architect is Studio BKA, and the historic consultants are Southkick | Rolf Preservation Works, who provided information for this narrative.
