Tara A. Dudley, assistant professor in the University of Texas School of Architecture, discusses her new book, Building Antebellum New Orleans: Free People of Color and Their Influence, a deeply researched examination of the free 19th-century Black craftsmen and real estate developers who transformed the cultural and architectural legacy of New Orleans. Although the building trades were dominated by men, no matter their ethnic caste in the racially diverse city, women played important roles as property owners and developers in the community of Free People of Color. Dr. Dudley will highlight the agency of several femmes de couler libres and their contributions to New Orleans’ antebellum architectural development.
This online program, presented via Zoom, is free to the public, but participants must register in advance.
