Actor Brandon Routh will take time out of his shooting schedule in New Orleans to partner with Rebuilding Together New Orleans, City Year Louisiana and ServiceNation on a home rehabilitation project. Routh is currently on location in New Orleans shooting DEAD OF NIGHT and recently finished shooting SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD. The SUPERMAN RETURNS star is thrilled to be a part of ServiceNation: “Having worked here with the great people of New Orleans, I’m excited to aid and promote service opportunities in this beautiful city.”

The event coincides with the recent passage of the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act, which is expected to be signed into law by President Barack Obama on April 21st. The Serve America Act devotes $5.7 billion over five years to expanding or creating national service programs, more than tripling the number of national service positions, including AmeriCorps, from 75,000 to 250,000.

Nonprofits like Rebuilding Together New Orleans and City Year rely on AmeriCorps members to execute their post-Katrina recovery projects in the city. Rebuilding Together New Orleans has restored 168 houses since Hurricane Katrina, with 42 more currently in progress. Since 2005, City Year Louisiana has served over 250,000 hours, tutored over 3000 students in order to help students and schools succeed as well as help solve the state’s drop out crisis, and helped rebuild in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita by leading over 2000 volunteers in community service projects.

Mr. Routh serves as an ambassador for ServiceNation, a coalition of 190 nonprofits dedicated to expanding community and national service opportunities, and elevating service as a core ideal in our democracy. ServiceNation coalition members worked hard to encourage Congress to pass Serve America Act.

Mr. Routh, along with other volunteers and AmeriCorps and City Year members, will be working on the Holy Cross home of Mr. Charlie Taylor, a former longshoreman at New Orleans’ Industrial Canal who lost his eyesight due to a workplace accident. Despite his struggles, Mr. Taylor remains warm and optimistic about the opportunity to move back into his home. Sunday’s efforts by the volunteers bring him one step closer to coming home.
