SUMMARY:Reviving the Lost Art of Moving Houses with Writer & Journalist Nicola Twilley (Virtual Event)
DESCRIPTION:What You’ll Learn \n\n\n\nWhat if the best way to save a historic house was to move it?  \n\n\n\nEvery year\, thousands of perfectly good homes across the United States are demolished while housing remains in short supply. At the same time\, construction and demolition debris makes up a significant share of what we send to landfills\, and the carbon embodied in new building materials carries a substantial environmental cost. In this illustrated presentation\, writer and journalist Nicola Twilley will explore an old solution that is making a surprising comeback: moving houses.  \n\n\n\nTwilley will introduce the Historic Home Relocation Project\, which launched in 2025 to move homes slated for demolition in Altadena\, California\, to lots where they can replace houses destroyed in the Eaton Fire. Drawing on her research into the history of house-moving in the United States and Los Angeles\, she’ll explore why moving buildings was once commonplace\, why the practice fell out of favor\, and what it might take to revive it today.  \n\n\n\nThe history is stranger than you might expect\, involving movie stars\, dressage horses\, and skyscrapers sliced in half. But house-moving isn’t simply a historical curiosity. In an era of managed coastal retreat\, extreme weather\, housing shortages\, and climate change\, it may offer a compelling tool for rethinking how we preserve\, relocate\, and reuse buildings.  \n\n\n\nFollowing Twilley’s presentation\, we’ll bring in a New Orleans expert in historic house moving for a conversation comparing the experiences of Los Angeles and New Orleans. Together\, we’ll explore how the opportunities and challenges of moving houses play out in two cities with very different histories\, landscapes\, housing markets\, and climate risks.   \n\n\n\nThe program will conclude with an audience Q&A.  \n\n\n\nWhy Take This Class? \n\n\n\nHouse-moving offers a fascinating—and increasingly relevant—way to think about preservation\, sustainability\, and the future of our cities. As communities grapple with climate change\, extreme weather\, housing shortages\, and the loss of existing buildings\, understanding when and how a building can be moved rather than demolished gives us another tool for imagining what’s possible.  \n\n\n\nJoin us for a lively look at the lost art of moving houses and what its revival might mean for New Orleans and beyond.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n About the Instructor\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Nicola Twilley is author of Frostbite: How Refrigeration Changed Our Food\, Our Planet\, and Ourselves\, winner of the 2025 James Beard Award for Literary Writing\, the 2025 California Book Awards Nonfiction Gold Medal\, the 2025 Nach Waxman Prize\, and the 2025 Nautilus Book Awards Gold Medal for Journalism and Investigative Reporting. She is co-host of the award-winning Gastropod podcast\, which looks at food through the lens of history and science and is part of the Vox Media Podcast Network in partnership with Eater. Her first book\, Until Proven Safe: The History and Future of Quarantine\, was co-authored with Geoff Manaugh and was named one of the best books of 2021 by Time\, NPR\, The Guardian\, and the Financial Times. She is a contributing writer at The New Yorker and was one of the 2025 winners of the National Academies of Sciences Eric and Wendy Schmidt Awards for Excellence in Science Communications. She lives in Los Angeles.  \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHistoric Core Scholarships\n\n\n\nWe believe preservation education should be accessible to everyone. For all of the PRC’s fee-based programs\, we reserve a portion of seats for Historic Core Scholarships\, providing free registration for community members who are stewards of historic structures (built prior to 1976) and who otherwise might not be able to participate. \n\n\n\nPaid registration fees support the Preservation Resource Center’s educational programs and help us keep them accessible to our community. \n\n\n\nNeed a Historic Core Scholarship? Select the scholarship option when registering. No explanation or documentation is required.

SUMMARY:Before You Renovate: A Practical Guide to Evaluating Your Historic Home with Architect & Preservationist Alex Barthel
DESCRIPTION:What You’ll Learn  \n\n\n\nThinking about renovating a historic home? Before you hire contractors\, finalize plans\, or start demolition\, it’s worth understanding exactly what you’re working with.  \n\n\n\nIn this hands-on workshop\, architect and preservationist Alex Barthel will walk participants through the process he uses to evaluate a property before a renovation begins. Using real New Orleans homes as case studies\, you’ll learn how to research zoning regulations\, historic district designations\, tax credit opportunities\, property history\, and renovation considerations that can significantly affect the scope\, cost\, and timeline of a project.  \n\n\n\nAlong the way\, Alex will demonstrate practical online tools—including the City of New Orleans Property Viewer\, zoning maps\, tax assessor records\, Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps\, and other public resources—and explain how architects use this information to help clients make informed decisions.  \n\n\n\nWhether you’re considering buying a historic home\, planning a renovation\, or simply curious about how preservation and design intersect\, you’ll leave with a clearer understanding of how to assess a property’s opportunities and constraints before investing time and money.  \n\n\n\nYou’ll Leave Able To:  \n\n\n\n\nResearch the basic history\, zoning\, and regulatory context of a New Orleans property \n\n\n\n\n\nDetermine whether a property may qualify for historic tax credits or fall within historic review districts \n\n\n\n\n\nEstimate the scope and complexity of a renovation at a high level \n\n\n\n\n\nUnderstand when—and why—to bring in professionals such as architects\, contractors\, engineers\, or preservation specialists \n\n\n\n\n\nApproach a renovation project with greater confidence and fewer costly surprises \n\n\n\n\nWhy Take This Class?  \n\n\n\nMany homeowners discover restrictions\, hidden costs\, or preservation requirements only after they’ve purchased a property or begun planning a renovation. This class will help you understand what questions to ask—and where to find the answers—before you commit\, saving time\, money\, and frustration.  \n\n\n\nWhat to Bring  \n\n\n\nA laptop is recommended if you’d like to follow along with the online research tools\, though a notebook is perfectly suitable if you’d prefer to take notes.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Alex Barthel\n Alex Barthel is a licensed architect and preservationist whose practice focuses on the renovation\, addition\, and adaptive reuse of historic homes throughout Louisiana and Mississippi. He believes successful residential design respects a building’s historic character while embracing contemporary living and construction methods. Alex holds both a Master of Architecture and a Master of Preservation Studies from Tulane University’s School of Architecture\, as well as a bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee. \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPay What You CanWe believe everyone should have access to preservation education. That’s why this program is offered on a pay-what-you-can basis. \n\n\n\nWhen registering\, simply enter the amount that works for you\, whether that’s $0\, $25\, somewhere in between\, or more. \n\n\n\nFinancial contributions of any size help the Preservation Resource Center continue offering educational programs and helps us keep them accessible to our community.
