Beams and Brews visits 3232 Grand Route St. John
Event Navigation

Mike Bertel and Caroline Rogers, owners of Inhab Group, purchased what appeared to be a 1920s raised Craftsman Double. The removal of layers of modern features uncovered brick between post construction, bargeboard walls, cypress flooring, and federalist windows. Looking intently at the construction and completing in-depth archival research revealed that the home was built between 1812 and 1830 and originally may have been a dogtrot design. The open breezeway or “dogtrot” was then modified into an enclosed center hall that still exists today. In 1913, the building was raised eight feet and moved back to create paved roads and sidewalks. Inhab Group, with the aid of Southkick Historic Preservation, is completing an extremely sensitive restoration, retaining as many architectural features as possible while utilizing historic tax credits. The home will remain a private residence with rental space on the first floor.
