As part of the Bridge to Crafts Careers program, the Preservation Resource Center of New Orleans and the World Monuments Fund will host two back-to-back one-week sessions exploring historic building trades through hands-on learning in historic St. Louis Cemetery no. 2.
During week one, December 8-12, participants will learn proper methods of cleaning and repairing stone tablets, gaining basic knowledge of caring for stone both in and outside of cemeteries. During week two, December 15-19, participants will clean and restore historic ironwork and maintain vegetation around historic tombs.
This program is offered to participants with at least a basic background in construction or building trades, such as through school or a workforce development program, who are interested in learning more about historic preservation and trades. Participants will be paid $10/hour for a total of 30 hours per week. Applicants may apply for one or both weeks.
The program will meet from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, starting at the PRC offices at 923 Tchoupitoulas with the majority of time spent at St. Louis Cemetery no. 2 at 300 N. Claiborne Ave. Participants will need to arrange their own transportation and are expected to attend all five days of each session they are enrolled in.
