Rebuilding Hope, One House at a Time

For Eugene Gamble, a 73-year-old resident of the Big Easy, the past three years have been anything but simple. When Hurricane Katrina swept through New Orleans on Aug. 29, 2005, the city’s complex system of levees, built piecemeal over the past century, failed in 50 places in the enormous storm surge. Within hours, the majority of New Orleans was flooded, including Mr. Gamble’s historic neighborhood, Faubourg Tremé.
