What You’ll Learn
New Orleans is full of historic houses, but uncovering when a property was built, who lived there, and how it changed over time can take some detective work. In this practical introduction to property research, archivist Amanda Fallis of the New Orleans City Archives & Special Collections will introduce the records and resources available to help you piece together the history of a New Orleans property.
Fallis will walk through the Archives’ collections and demonstrate how to use resources such as tax assessments, Sewerage & Water Board connection records, city directories, newspapers, and Sanborn maps. You’ll learn how these sources can be used together to research a property’s construction date and uncover details about its owners, occupants, and history.
The presentation will include examples of original archival records, giving participants a chance to see historic documents firsthand. The program will conclude with an audience Q&A.

Amanda Fallis
Amanda Fallis is a librarian and archivist in the City Archives & Special Collections at New Orleans Public Library, where she works with genealogical and municipal government records and develops educational programming about the Archives for the public. She is a Certified Archivist and a member of NAGARA, SSA, GNOA, and LAMA. She currently serves on the board of the Louisiana Historical Society.
