The Preservation Resource Center is seeking a motivated and energetic individual with passion for preservation and knowledge of New Orleans’ historic cemeteries to lead our new department dedicated to the restoration and preservation of our city’s historic cemeteries. In 1974, civic leader Mary Louise Christovich founded Save Our Cemeteries, a nonprofit, to restore St. Louis Cemetery No. 2. In the 50 years that followed, the organization grew its mission and scope to conduct restoration work in cemeteries across the city; to advocate for cemetery preservation; and to lead tours of historic cemeteries to inspire a love that could translate into long-term support from locals and visitors alike. The nonprofit closed in February 2025, and came under the PRC’s wing as a new department. The PRC will develop this department’s work with the same principles that its founder and boards followed for the past five decades – using advocacy, education and actual restoration work to save and revitalize New Orleans’ historic cemeteries. PRC leaders are currently engaging historic SOC constituents, and understanding modern cemetery issues and needs, to best build this department; this work will continue in the months to come, and this new director will be integral to analyzing this information, and building the department accordingly to be the best possible vehicle to preserve New Orleans’ historic cemeteries. While leading this new department and helping form its future body of work, this director will also work closely with other department heads at the PRC – advocacy, education, conservation, events and communications – to strategize and work together on mutual goals.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Work with Executive Director to establish the department’s work, goals and budget.
- Spearhead efforts for the SOC department, working collaboratively with PRC department heads on mutual goals when possible:
- Advocacy: affect change at the local and state levels to ensure better maintenance and access to historic cemeteries.
- Education: offer lectures and classes throughout the year to educate people on how to research and maintain family tombs.
- Conservation: choose tombs to restore, and then execute the work.
- Events: ensure legacy events are carried forward, while working with staff on developing new event offerings.
- Communications: facilitate or produce original content about historic cemeteries that can be used in PRC’s magazine, website, and/or social media channels.
- Work with Tour Manager to ensure cemetery tours offerings are regular and excellent, ensuring correct historic information is being offered.
- Work with Development Director to re-engage legacy SOC board members and participants.
- Work with Executive Director and Development Director to identify sponsors, donors, underwriters, or revenue opportunities that can help fund the work of the department.
- Manage department budget, with help from Executive Director and accountant.
- Assist with PRC events as needed.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree preferred.
- 3 years of professional related experience required.
- Knowledge of New Orleans’ cemeteries and culture is preferred.
- Highly organized, with excellent attention to detail.
- Personable and respectful to others, from team members to constituents. Ability to get along with colleagues and collaborate successfully is a must.
- Passion for the mission of the PRC and SOC is a must.
