Home for the Holidays. It’s an expression that carries deeper meaning this year as we return to beloved traditions that had been disrupted by the pandemic. One of those traditions is the Preservation Resource Center’s Holiday Home Tour, presented by McEnery Residential, an event that has been a cherished part of holiday celebrations in New Orleans for 47 years. The PRC is thrilled to open the doors once again to private homes in the Garden District as we share in this season of gratitude and joy. We look forward to seeing old friends and meeting new ones at the PRC’s Holiday Home Tour boutique and Holiday Book Festival, all taking place Dec. 10-11 as part of our Holiday Home Tour celebration.
The Holiday Home Tour gives us a chance to again admire the gorgeous historic architecture of the Garden District. This neighborhood boasts magnificent Greek Revival and Italianate mansions, as well as modest homes, including hundreds of shotguns that, too, display incredible craftsmanship. Walking along the brick sidewalks framed by live oaks and iron fences, it’s easy to feel festive and to develop an even deeper appreciation of New Orleans’ historic neighborhoods.
The Garden District began developing around 1832 and was originally incorporated as the City of Lafayette, the seat of Jefferson Parish. The PRC’s Holiday Home Tour was born in 1975 as four homeowners around First Street opened their houses for the inaugural “Candlelight Christmas Celebration.” While the name has changed, the seasonal cheer has not. This event is PRC’s biggest annual fundraiser, and it’s also a time to celebrate the passion we all share for our city’s historic neighborhoods.
